Frequently Asked Questions
Each Secure Bike ID comes with an inner "collar" piece, an outer "insert" piece that has the reflector end and a waterproof emergency form rolled up in the insert piece.
How do I install my Secure Bike I.D.?
- Unroll the waterproof emergency form and complete all the requested information using a permanent ultra fine marker. There may be several choices, but we have found the Sharpie ultra fine marker works great. In the "Other" space provided be sure to write in any additional information that you wish to convey to an emergency care giver that we may not have asked. Additional waterproof emergency forms are available here.
- Write neatly. The form has to be read by others who are there to help you. If it's not legible, it's not going to help. Allow the ink to dry for a moment, before going to step 3.
- Fold the emergency form and then roll it up tight. Insert the form into the open end of the insert piece such that about 1/4" remains exposed. If the form doesn't easily slide into the insert piece, then re-roll it a bit tighter. One simple trick is to turn the form you are inserting it and it should easily slide in place.
- Align the collar piece with the insert piece, such that the slots in the insert piece can be seen lined up through the slots in the collar piece, but only about 1/4 inserted.
- Remove your current end plug from the left side of your handlebar.
- Holding the outer collar piece, insert the entire Secure Bike ID into the handle bar opening and rotate it so that so that the "Securebikeid.com" is on the bottom. This should align the reflective material in the label for maximum reflection to passing traffic approaching from the rear.
- Be sure the collar piece is now completely inserted into the handle bar and hold in place as you slowly push the insert piece in all the way to complete the installation.
- Secure Bike ID is designed to be re-used, so you can remove the insert piece, update your information and return it to your bike, or even move it to a new bike. If you have several bikes, we suggest one for each, so you never forget to move it and "your information is always with you when you ride".
How do I adjust the fit to my bike?
- If Secure Bike ID is slightly too snug...no problem, there is a coin slot, or depression under the top of the insert piece. This slot is located at about the 10 o'clock position when the label is properly oriented (see installation step 6). Place a coin into the depression and slowly twist to get the insert piece to start to retract. Then pull it out. Save the parts because it's reusable.
- If Secure Bike ID is too tight and the insert piece will not completely seat. Then you can carefully sand off (shave down to the surface) a small portion of the end of the raised ribs that run down each of the three sections. These small ribs end about 1/8 of an inch from the far end of the collar piece. We suggest shaving off only about 1/8 inch at a time and probably no more than 1/4 off will considerably loosen the fit.
- If Secure Bike ID is too loose, it can be made tighter by adding a small strip of black electrical tape over one or more of the three sections of the collar piece. We suggest adding a small strip that just covers about the last 1" - 1 1/2" of the collar piece and apply one at a time then check to be sure it isn't too tight.
- Bike ID is intended to fit most Road bikes and a bunch of others; however it will not fit the narrower diameter mountain bike handle bars. Secure Bike ID will soon be available for these applications.
